Cereal snacks are almost as old as cereal itself. Cheerios toasted oat cereal announces an alternative to cereal party mixes, popcorn and marshmallows. It’s called “Hot Buttered Os.”
Simple and easy to make, as well as convenient, Hot Buttered Os call for only three ingredients. And most important, they taste good. Hot Buttered Os are a TV shack that promises to become an American classic.
Four variations have been developed to give a different flavor for each weeknight’s TV viewing. Microwave directions are included to make preparation time even faster. And you can eat Hot Buttered Os from the dish in which they were prepared!

Hot buttered Os
1/4 cup butter or margarine
4 cups Cheerios cereal
Melt butter in 10-inch skillet over low heat. Add cereal. Cook and stir until well coated and hot, 2 to 3 minutes; sprinkle with salt. Serve warm or cool. Four cups snack.
Microwave directions: Place butter in a 2-1/2-quart microwave-proof bowl. Microwave uncovered on high (100%) until melted. Stir in cereal until well-coated. Microwave 1 minute, stirring after 30 seconds. Sprinkle with salt.

Bacony Hot Buttered Os: Fry 4 or 5 slices bacon in 10-inch skillet until crisp; remove bacon. Cook and stir cereal and bacon fat as directed. Omit salt. Crumble bacon into cereal.
Curried Hot Buttered Os: Substitute curry powder for the salt and add 1/2 cup raisins.
Peanutty Hot Buttered Os: Add 1 cup salted peanuts after sprinkling with salt.
Seasoned Hot Buttered Os: Substitute 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt or onion salt for the salt.
Hot buttered Honey Nut Cheerios

My buddy Koshii’s favorite Snacky Treat is something she calls “Hot Butter’d Ohs.”
What she does is take some Honey Nut Cheerios and a hunk of butter and brown them up nice and crispy in a frying pan.
Then she takes the hot, buttered Honey Nut Cheerios, dumps ’em into a bowl, and shoves the whole kit and caboodle into the freezer for 5 minutes.
The freezer is crucial, Koshii says, because if you let the Cheerios air-cool, they’ll get all mushy and stuff.
After she pulls them out of the freezer, she stacks a bunch of the Honey Nut Cheerios on a toothpick and nibbles on them.

I made these first with the salt,just tried them and used sugar and cinnamon!So good!!
Omg!! I finally found it. I knew I wasn’t crazy!! I was born in ’77 and distinctly remember my mom baking honey nut cheerios in the oven with butter. It was one of the best things ever. She doesn’t even remember so I can’t wait to show her. Clearly I’ll be making this stat.
Anyone ever used slightly stale Cheerios? Should I toast them in the oven first to crisp them?
