We loved to dress up like popular cartoon characters like The Incredible Hulk, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Wonder Woman and Bugs Bunny — and we thought we were so cool!
The more inspired of kids even tried to make our own creations with everyday items like cardboard boxes and aluminum foil. (Who else went dressed up as a TV set or a robot?)
The rise of character-based costumes
In the ’50s, ’60s, and even through the ’80s, pop culture characters were a huge part of Halloween. Popular costumes were based on TV shows and cartoons, with kids dressing as The Incredible Hulk, the Smurfs, or even Snoopy. These store-bought costumes often came with a vinyl outfit and a plastic mask with an elastic band, which was sometimes more painful than spooky! But hey, if it meant becoming your favorite character for a night, the discomfort was totally worth it.
Homemade DIY ingenuity
For some kids, the challenge of making their own costume added extra excitement. Aluminum foil could be turned into a robot suit, and bedsheets easily became a ghost or toga. Homemade costumes might not have had the slick look of their store-bought counterparts, but they sparked creativity and came with a sense of pride. Whether you were wrapping yourself in tin foil to look like an astronaut or using a cardboard box to become a walking TV, these DIY costumes were all about imagination.
Safety wasn’t always first
One of the most memorable parts of those retro Halloween costumes was how unsafe they could be! The plastic masks made it hard to see (and breathe), and the synthetic materials weren’t always fire-friendly. Reflective strips and flame-resistant labels weren’t part of the deal back then, but nobody seemed to mind. Parents sent us out into the dark with a flashlight and candy bag, and it all felt like part of the Halloween adventure.

I remember wearing those “drug store” costumes with the tiny holes for breathing in the mask and the costume was made of plastic. I would be sweating but had such a great time trick and treating I didn’t care.
