Cottagecore: What’s old is new
Long before “cottagecore” entered the modern style vocabulary, shoppers were already embracing its soft, nostalgic look. Old-school cottagecore took shape in the early 1980s, when prairie dresses — full of ruffles, florals, and high-necked details — stepped back into everyday fashion. After the shimmer and sleek silhouettes of the disco era, the shift felt almost like a collective exhale.

The prairie look drew inspiration from 19th-century frontier clothing, though the revival arrived with updated fabrics and ready-to-wear convenience. Designers leaned into puffed sleeves, lace trim, flounced hems and tiny printed patterns that suggested handmade charm. Department stores described the style simply: “ruffles, ruffles everywhere,” appearing on collars, cuffs, and shoulders across blouses, skirts and dresses.
The trend spread quickly through women’s and girls’ departments alike. One retail manager noted that longer skirts with flounced hemlines would show up “in all areas of women’s clothing,” while younger shoppers treated prairie pieces as special-occasion wear. Some paired ruffled blouses with blue jeans, blending country inspiration with everyday practicality — a reminder that fashion often adapts to real life rather than replacing it.

Pop culture helped keep the aesthetic visible. Television shows set in earlier eras, renewed interest in Americana, and brands known for romantic prints all played a role. Even major retailers featured the look, and recognizable faces modeled the styles. Ads highlighted woven cotton blends, eyelet details, smocked bodices and button-front designs that nodded to the past while fitting comfortably into contemporary wardrobes.
Seen today, the similarities between the prairie revival and modern cottagecore are striking. The same affection for vintage silhouettes, soft colors and pastoral imagery continues to cycle through fashion. Below, we’ve gathered a collection of vintage photos, ads, and catalog pages from roughly 1979 through 1983 — a moment when the prairie dress found a new audience and old-fashioned charm felt completely current again.
The prairie dress & skirt: Ruffles, ruffles everywhere

The prairie skirt is another popular “dressy-active” look. A welcome style for juniors in spring and summer, the prairie look is big for children this fall, says Jim Helphrey, assistant manager of Herberger’s Department Store, Kirkwood Plaza.
Longer skirts and dresses with flounced hemlines will be seen in all areas of women’s clothing, he says.
Debbie Arnold, 10, says she wears blue jeans and corduroy jeans most of the time to school because of “gym days,” but would wear a prairie skirt on “dress-up days.”

Patterned after fashions of the Old West, the prairie look features “ruffles, ruffles everywhere” on blouse collars, cuffs, and shoulders, Helphrey says.
Even long-sleeved T-shirts in the style of athletic clothes have ruffled trim or shoulders. Nibbe says she likes the ruffled blouses, but not the prairie skirt: “Sometimes the colors are wrong.”
Eleven-year-old Carlson says she and her friends would probably wear the blouses, but with blue jeans.
