Here's a classic recipe from the 1970s for delicious chocolate-peanut bar cookies

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1-1/4 cups flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate morsels
  • 1/2 cup salted peanuts, chopped

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Grease oblong pan, 13- x 9- x 2-inches.
  3. Mix together shortening, peanut butter, sugars and egg.
  4. Stir in next five ingredients and one package of chocolate chips.
  5. Spread in pan.
  6. Bake about 20 minutes.
  7. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with other package of chocolate morsels over baked layer.
  8. Place baking sheet over pan so contained heat will soften morsels. 
  9. Spread softened chocolate evenly and sprinkle with peanuts.
  10. Cut into bars about 3- x 1-inch each.
