The rice krispy treat layer
As any shopper knows, name-brand kids’ cereals like Fruity Pebbles are bright and flavorful but not super-cheap. We needed to make three big batches, so wanted a more budget-friendly option than going full-Pebbles.
Adding the fruity pebble rice krispy treats layer
Rather than make these treats from only Fruity Pebbles, I decided to go for a layered version that still looked and tasted great, but used a standard Rice Krispies Treats recipe as the base, then added a layer of the colorful cereal on top.

- 1-3/4 cups Fruity Pebbles cereal, divided

- Using a buttered spatula, waxed paper or parchment paper, evenly press the mixture into 13x9x2-inch pan that has been lightly-buttered or coated with cooking spray.

- Using a buttered spatula, waxed paper or parchment paper, evenly press the mixture on top of the pan of Rice Krispies treats.
- Immediately sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of Fruity Pebbles over the top of the still-warm marshmallow/colored cereal mixture, and press them into the top by hand. (You want them to stick, but stay intact so the top looks nice.)
How to finish these Fruity Pebbles Rice Krispie treats
- Cool for 2 hours. Then, using a sharp, lightly-buttered knife, cut them into 1-1/2-inch squares.
- Store in a tightly-covered container for up to 3 days.
Microwave directions
- To melt the marshmallow mixture with a microwave instead of a saucepan: In a microwave-safe bowl, heat butter and marshmallows on high for 30-60 seconds, stir, then heat for 10-20 seconds more until they are all melted. (NOTE: Cooking times may vary because microwave ovens are not all the same -- check mixture often rather than risk burning it.) Stir until smooth.
Notes
Like them chewier? Crisper? The marshmallow/cereal ratios may be altered to suit your preference.
