1977 Ford cars: Flashy trims, bold colors and limited editions for spring

In the spring of 1977, Ford rolled out a fresh batch of cars that leaned into variety. Whether you were into pickups, personal luxury, economy compacts or something sporty, there was something on the lot with your name on it. And if you were looking for bright paint, stripe packages or special trims, Ford had those in heavy supply too.

By the late ’70s, the auto market was shifting. Buyers were moving away from gas-guzzling muscle cars and toward smaller, more efficient rides. Ford responded by putting a bigger spotlight on compact models like the Pinto, Mustang II and Maverick. That didn’t mean boring, though. The 1977 Ford cars lineup had a long list of trim levels and appearance packages that gave even the smallest vehicles some personality. Limited editions, in particular, were a big deal that year.

The Mustang II, for example, came in several flavors for 1977, including a T-roof convertible and a Cobra version with racing stripes. Ford also introduced a Limited Edition version of the Mustang II, with unique badging and upscale interior options. Pintos were everywhere too, offered in versions like the Cruising Wagon with bubble windows or a sporty Rallye Appearance Package. Some even came with the Accent Stripe Group or dressed up as Limited Editions.

Larger models weren’t left out. The LTD II came with a Sports Touring Package or a Sports Appearance Package, giving the midsize model a little more edge. The Thunderbird for 1977 had a full-on personal luxury vibe, and came in standout colors like Lipstick Red. Trucks were also part of the spring push, including the F-100 and F-150 in Custom, Ranger and Explorer trims. Even Ford’s Econoline vans joined the trend with the Free Wheeling Option package, built for road trippers who liked a little flash.

We’ve gathered a full collection of Ford’s 1977 lineup to show exactly how much variety was available that spring. From bright paint to pinstripes to special editions, these vintage ads give a look at how Ford tried to cover every kind of driver.
