Make the famous Red Lobster biscuit recipe at home

The famous Cheddar Bay Biscuits were introduced by Red Lobster restaurants in 1992, but the cheesy-garlic wonders didn’t have the “Cheddar Bay” added to their name until around 1997.

Just because they come with every meal served at the chain’s many locations, that doesn’t mean they’re not a big deal. As of 2017, almost a million of those biscuits were being baked every day — and they use more than 8000 pounds of cheese to make ’em.

In her book Bossypants, comedian Tina Fey wrote, “There is no one of-woman-born who does not like Red Lobster cheddar biscuits. Anyone who claims otherwise is a liar and a Socialist.”

Mixed every 15 minutes in the restaurant by hand using a top-secret recipe, the company says, the biscuits are made “with quality-aged Cheddar cheese and finished with a savory garlic topping.”

The chain won’t give out the exact recipe, but you can buy a couple of different official mixes, along with tasty heat-and-serve frozen versions.

But if you want to try making them yourself, this homemade copycat recipe is for you! It’s based on a recipe by Linda Cicero of The Miami Herald that was published back in May 1998.

Red Lobster biscuit recipe: Copycat Cheddar Bay biscuits

Yield: 12 biscuits
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes


  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (only if you use unsalted butter)
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2/3 cup cold milk
  • 1 heaping cup (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon finely-minced garlic (or granulated garlic/garlic powder with no salt)
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced parsley or parsley flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning (optional)


  1. Heat oven to 450 degrees F.
  2. Stir together the flour, baking powder, confectioners' sugar and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender or two knives (or pulse with a food processor), until mixture looks like small peas.
  4. Stir in milk with a fork just until the dough cleans the sides of the bowl.
  5. Stir in cheese.
  6. Place butter and garlic in a 9- by 13-inch pan; place in oven until butter melts and garlic is fragrant, about three minutes.
  7. Remove pan from oven and stir in the parsley.
  8. Use about 1/4 cup dough to form a ball. Roll it in butter mixture to coat ,and arrange in pan.
  9. Repeat with remaining dough. Pat tops down slightly so bottoms are flat.
  10. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, until just golden.
  11. Spoon any remaining butter on top. Serve warm.
