Young actor River Phoenix was on the rise until the unthinkable happened

By the late 1980s, River Phoenix had become one of the most talked-about young actors in Hollywood. With soulful eyes and serious acting chops, he stood out from the usual teen heartthrobs. By 1987, he had already built a résumé that hinted at a long and promising future in film — a future that, sadly, would be cut short just a few years later.

Born in 1970, River started acting young, first appearing in TV shows before landing his breakout role in Stand by Me (1986). That movie, based on a Stephen King story, put him on the map. It showed that he could hold his own in dramatic roles, something that set him apart from many of his peers. Soon after, he was cast alongside major stars like Sidney Poitier in Little Nikita and with Meredith Salenger in A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon, both of which hit theaters in early 1988.

Little Nikita gave him the chance to play a teenager whose world turns upside down after learning his parents are Soviet spies. The movie wasn’t a massive hit, but Phoenix’s performance got attention. That same year, Jimmy Reardon gave him a shot at a different kind of role — one with more comedy and teen angst. Neither film turned him into a box-office star overnight, but they helped build his reputation as a serious actor with range.

His most critically praised performance came later that year in Running on Empty, directed by Sidney Lumet. River played the teenage son of radical fugitives, a role that earned him an Academy Award nomination. It was clear to many at the time that Phoenix had the potential to move far beyond teen roles into something more lasting. He was already picking roles that challenged him, and working with respected directors who saw his potential.

Below, we’ve gathered a collection of photos, articles and movie stills that show River Phoenix in action during this key phase of his career. These snapshots from the late ’80s capture a young actor in motion — right as he was beginning to show the kind of star power that made people believe he’d be around for decades.

River Phoenix — the 17-year-old heartthrob many call the most exciting teenage actor of the ’80s — is finally on the rise with the release of his long-awaited films Little Nikita (with Sidney Poitier) in January, and Jimmy Reardon (with Meredith Salenger) in late February [1988].

His next onscreen exposure will come next fall in Sidney Lumet’s Running on Empty (which wrapped last September) with girlfriend Martha Plimpton.

River plays 17-year-old Danny Pope, the musically-gifted son of fugitive parents who bombed a research laboratory where napalm was being made.

What happened to River Phoenix?

Just five years after his breakout in Stand by Me, River Phoenix died outside The Viper Room nightclub in Los Angeles on October 31, 1993. He was only 23. The official cause was acute drug intoxication. His sudden death shocked fans and the industry alike, cutting short what many believed would be one of the most remarkable acting careers of his generation.
