A masterly mix of patterns gave warmth and a sense of intimacy to this vintage Texas living room/great room.
The ceiling here was 15 feet high, and the room — seen here in 1970 — was dominated by ceiling-height windows, looking out onto a poolside pergola.
The dimensions might suggest spatial starkness, but the reality was eminently comfortable because there were no barren surfaces in the room.
The eye was continually pleased by a variety of color and pattern, kept entertained by the shift from the leafy drapery fabric to the contrasting floral of the armchairs to the bold, stylized four leaf clovers in the rug.
The yellow coffee table and antique chair upholstery helped boost this big room’s sunny warmth. Also with yellow: Needlepoint cushions, no two alike, that created an additional pattern on the sofa.
Noteworthy were both the magnificent architectural detail, and the vintage Delft collection in the built-in cabinet.
