Flower Basket needlepunch bedspread (1972)

Sears “Flower Basket.” The brilliant beauty of needlepunch.

Sears revives an American Colonial design. And an almost lost American art form — needlepunch. The deep dimension of the Flower Basket design is created by hand guiding each yarn loop through the fabric.

And what yarns these are! They’re an acrylic fiber that makes colors super-bright and beautiful against the off-white rayon and cotton blend background. Flower Basket is trimmed with fringe, and is easily dry-cleaned.

From Italy with love: Vintage Sears Bellissimo bedspreads.

The most beautiful bedspreads in the world are made in the province of Lombardy. There, in a remote hillside village, tapestry weaving is still a living art.

On the looms of today, Italian craftsmen weave bedspreads like their ancestors wove during the Renaissance. Spreads that are thick, luxurious, and heavy in fringe.

Just one look and you’ll know why Sears calls these classic tapestries “Bellissimo.” And imports them just for you.

In twenty color combinations, five designs. All easily dry-cleaned. In every size, even king and queen. At most larger Sears, Roebuck and Co. stores, and in the catalog.

Vintage 1970s bedspreads: Hand-screened linen prints (1971)

You’ve scoured the stores. So you know. Bedspreads with hand-screened imported linen prints can be pretty expensive.

Not this time! This exquisite Seniors bedspread is a marvelous buy. It’s beautifully made. The imported linen facing is quilted onto a firm white cotton back. Thickly filled with Sears own Duro-Puff polyester. With corded seams, blindstitched hems.

The colors glow with beauty, the pattern is inspired by antique crewel embroidery. And both bedspread and matching pinch-pleated draperies are easily dry-cleaned.

1970s bedding: “Rajah.” Sears fresh translation of the Far East.

It started at a museum show of India art. This rare lotus-and-arch design shone out, and captured our eye. From there, it was a matter of turning it into a beautiful bedspread for you.

Delicate colors dyed into lustrous taffeta acetate. Backing of sturdy cotton. And unusual square quilting to set off the unique design.

Showers of Flowers needlepunch 1970s bedspread

Sears Showers of Flowers. The brilliant beauty of needlepunch.

How on earth do you capture such glorious colors? It’s not easy. It takes a nearly forgotten craft called needlepunch. With tufting actually hand-guided to give colors deep dimension. It takes special yarns, too — yarns that are super-bright and beautiful.

It takes special yarns, too — yarns that are super-bright and beautiful. And then it takes the know-how of an award-winning designer like Dorothy Liebes to set these colors off. In bedspreads. In matching draperies.
