The womenswear in her collection was considered “casual sportswear,” and consisted mainly of everyday budget-friendly basics — from polo shirts to ruffled blouses, denim jeans to pastel swimsuits — and could be found at malls nationwide from 1981-1989.
Cheryl Tiegs clothing at Sears: The face (and the name) will be in the book (1980)
Excerpted from an article by Genevieve Buck – Austin American-Statesman (Texas) August 17, 1980
Cheryl Tiegs, America’s best-known and highest-paid model, has formed a fashion alliance with Sears, Roebuck & Co.
A collection of casual sportswear with Tiegs’ signature will be available this December in the firm’s 900 stores and through its spring 1981 catalog.
The 32-year-old with the radiant smile and the 10-plus figure was in Chicago last week for the announcement of the program to Sears executives.
Tiegs says her Sears partnership was a natural. “I grew up reading Sears catalogs, and worked with Sears early in my modeling career.”
She made her appearance as a Sears cover girl at 18 in 1966 [see that photo below], with another cover the following year, and numerous inside appearances later. She considers that Sears cover her first big break.
(When she started modeling at 16, she earned $25 a day. In 1978, she was making $2,000 a day, and although talk has it that her current rate is $25,000 a day, she works only on negotiated contracts rather than by the hour or the day.)

The first collection will include a small number of separates, but Tiegs says there are possibilities for more items or groups in the future, such as active sportswear or swimwear. Her own wardrobe reflects this penchant for casual clothes.
“I feel best in sweatshirts, jeans, cowboy boots and in the summer, shorts. The more natural I feel, the better.
“I don’t have a lot of clothes. I’m the worst shopper. Every six months I go on a spree, but I spend an extraordinarily small amount on clothes. My closet is very small, maybe only this big,” she said, indicating about a yard.

If you were a teen boy in the 80s, you almost certainly remember Cheryl Tiegs’ infamous mesh swimsuit, which was decidedly NOT in the Sears catalog… ;)
