Old-fashioned clove cake
Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening (part butter)
- 2-1/4 cups sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 5 eggs
- 3 cups sifted All-Purpose Flour
- 1 tablespoon Watkins ground cloves
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup sour milk or buttermilk
Instructions
- Grease and flour generously, 2- by 9-inch layer pans (1-1/2-inches deep) or a 9- by 13-inch oblong pan.
- Cream together until fluffy, the butter, sugar, vanilla and eggs (5 minutes at high speed on mixer or by hand).
- Sift together the dry ingredients and mix in (at low speed) alternately with sour milk or buttermilk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
- Pour into prepared pans.
- Bake at 350 (F) for 45 to 50 minutes.
- Remove from pans and cool on racks.
- Frost with a fluffy white icing or whipped cream.
- Decorate as desired.

This recipe is extremely close to the Clove Cake in “The Fallingwater Cookbook”. I wonder if Mrs. Henderson’s recipe was the inspiration or if she saw this advertisement.
