‘Tis the season for Merry Treats: Clown pops, surprise balls, crispy snowmen, toy animals, puddin’ tart shells

Fun & festive Christmas treats – made with Kellogg’s Rice Krispies cereal

Christmas 'tis the season for Merry Rice Krispies Treats (1970s)

Vintage Christmas Rice Krispies Treats: Start with this “Marshmallow Treats” recipe:

Ingredients

1/4 cup regular margarine or butter
1 10-ounce package regular marshmallows (about 40), or 4 cups tiny marshmallows
5 (to 6) cups Rice Krispies cereal

Directions

Melt margarine in 3-quart saucepan. Add marshmallows and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until marshmallows are melted and mixture is very syrupy. Remove from heat. Add Rice Krispies cereal and stir until well-coated.

Shape with buttered hands into Clown Pops, Snowmen, Toy Animals, and other “Merry Treats” shown below.

Christmas Rice Krispies Treats – Clown pops: Shape warm Rice Krispies cereal mixture to form 12 flat-bottomed ovals; insert wooden skewers. When cool, make clown faces with frosting, nuts, raisins or cookie decorations.

Surprise balls: Shape warm Rice Krispies mixture into 24 balls around surprise center of a gumdrop. raisins, walnut half, date or candied cherry. Roll in colored sugar or flaked coconut, cool.

Christmas Rice Krispies Treats – Crispy snowmen: Shape warm Rice Krispies cereal mixture to form 3 balls of decreasing size for each snowman; roll in flaked coconut. When cool. put balls together with thick confectioners’ sugar frosting to make snowmen; decorate with raisins, cinnamon candies and gumdrops.

Toy animals: Press warm Rice Krispies cereal mixture into buttered shallow pans in a layer about 1/2″ thick. When slightly cooled, cut into assorted shapes. Frost or decorate as desired.

Christmas Rice Krispies Treats – Puddin’ tart shells: Press thin layer of warm Rice Krispies mixture into buttered muffin-pan cups or custard cups to form tart shells. Let stand until firm; remove from pans. Just before serving fill with pudding, sweetened whipped cream, ice cream, or fruit.
