Back in the early 1980s, former Miss America and actress Mary Ann Mobley — along with her husband, TV host Gary Collins — created a home that blended Hollywood glamour with southern charm, reflecting their unique backgrounds and personalities. Mobley brought her Mississippi warmth to their house, which was styled with the help of architect-designer Hank Milam.

The house was designed to balance personal and formal spaces. The living room, for instance, was a bright space overlooking the backyard pool, while the family den was perfect for their daughter Clancy to spend time with her parents. (Side note: As of 2024, Clancy White is a top executive at Warner Bros Television.) Decorated with French antiques and heirloom silver, the dining room was used for more formal gatherings.

Below, we’ve collected some vintage articles and photos that capture this unique space and show how Mary Ann Mobley and Gary Collins designed a beautiful family home in the 1980s.

She is, of course, a former Miss Mississippi, who became Miss America in 1959, and has since been a busy actress.

In November 1967, she wed actor Gary Collins, and they bought this two-story Cape Cod house. (Daughter Clancy, 14, arrived in October 1968.)

The house, decorated by architect-designer Hank Milam, reflects Mary Ann’s southern upbringing and Gary’s easy-going charm.

The host of TV’s Hour Magazine, Gary made this year’s Miss America pageant a family affair when he became the new master of ceremonies.

Today, Gary and Mary Ann’s daughter, (Mary) Clancy Collins White, is a television executive at Warner Bros. Television. She has been instrumental in shaping modern TV, overseeing several major productions. Her connection to the entertainment industry runs deep, growing up in Beverly Hills as the child of Hollywood celebrities.

Gary Collins was a prominent television host, while Mary Ann Mobley enjoyed a successful acting career and was crowned Miss America. This upbringing offered Clancy an insider’s view of Hollywood, ultimately guiding her toward a career behind the scenes in television.

The den is a favorite gathering place. Mary Ann, who had great input in the decorating, hunted down many of the furnishings and paintings herself.
