Celebrate the Golden Gate

The Golden Gate Bridge opening day was a big deal in the city and beyond!

My grandmother, Nancy Leland (in white) — who was born and raised in San Francisco — and her best friends, Margery Powell, Esther Bullard, and Ann Bullard, are seen here attending the Bridge’s opening day festivities on May 27, 1937.  This picture represents one of her fondest memories. In fact, the ticket stub from this event was one of the very few things my grandmother kept until the very end of her life.

50 years later, in 1987, she walked across the bridge again for its anniversary celebration — one of an estimated 300,000 people who particiated in “Bridgewalk 1987.”
