The living room in this California home from the early 70s was a giant space with a freestanding fireplace built into the middle of the room.

Against the wall on two sides, white built-in sofas — with throw pillows in primary colors — made a comfy spot for lounging.

The wood floors were stained black, which matched the fireplace’s hood and chimney, which went way up into the ceiling.

One other important ingredient for this simple retro mod living room: the high walls and ceilings were all painted white wood, giving the tall room a spacious feel.
