Fashion notes from October of 1891

From The Cincinnati Enquirer (Cincinnati, Ohio), October 18, 1891

Tailor-made jackets in velvet are now quiet the thing, and made medium-length, double-breasted, turned-back collar and pockets on either side; very much, in fact, on the order of the English top coat. These velvet jackets are lined with either the pretty shot silks or with a heavy grade of peau de soie brocaded in small figures.

Bows on the back of the neck of gowns are very new. These are so long as to fall to the bottom of the skirt. Ribbons will be used on woolen gowns to a great extent, especially those intended for house wear.

In spite of many prophecies to the contrary, the capes are still with us, and are even longer than ever. In fact, some are so long as to be almost cloaks. The capes for cold weather are of cheviots, camel’s hairs and other rough materials, and are handsomely-lined, have fur cravats, others having the entire fronts faced with fur or feather trimming.

This winter, sealskin will be more expensive than ever, and, in consequence, will be considered the most stylish fur. That and sable will be the most worn, and will even be combined in the same garment.
