There were lots of elegant patterns in this entry hall, giving this room from the late 1940s a real 19th-century look.

These coordinating vintage wallpapers — seen on both the walls and the ceiling — were replicas of some antique Victorian styles that were popular in the 1800s.

Tufting on the wall, the flourish of swags, the modification of the central theme for the ceiling — these spelled nostalgia for an ornate period.

But see how well the sleek dado stripe controlled all this lushness, and the pinstriped paper below offered a staid counterpoint.

In the small hallway area, two antique chairs with a black finish sit on either side of an antique console table. In the foreground, an unusual hat stand — complete with mirror — adorns the wall.
