The perfect “separate,” if you’ll forgive a pun, is the classic, separating screen used for all periods of furniture.

This 7-panel diamond-patterned screen divider’s geometric harlequin (or diamond) pattern was painted in a cool variety of muted colors.

The blue it used matches the fabric that appeared on the sofa and chair, and gave flair to a room otherwise distinguished by a gray carpet and white brick wall.

The harlequin motif itself has universal appeal, and fits into the airy room with the ease of a sunny smile. It can dispel monotony in decorating, break up space into small and more usable areas, and is easy to move around as needed.
