This simple room didn’t need a lot to make it into a warm and welcoming example of crisp farmhouse style that would be at home in almost any decade.
As it happens, this room was redecorated with the red, white and black color scheme back in the early 1970s.
In this small space, a black & white houndstooth pattern area rug added an unmissable focal point to a room furnished with country-style antiques and reproductions. It contrasted sharply with the red walls and accessories.

The houndstooth check was repeated in the window treatment, which was another major part of the room’s decorative focus.
There, the cafe curtains were made entirely of material with the classic pattern, while the long overcurtains had a red ribbon detail along the edges, and houndstooth tiebacks.
The wood plank flooring was finished in bold red, in a shade that matched the main wall, the rocking chair cushion, and even the artwork and accessories.
