Is there life after high school?

An excerpt from “Is There Life After High School?” by Ralph Keyes, as published in the Statesman Journal (Salem, Oregon) –
August 8, 1976

Since high school is such an enrolling experience in this society, yearbooks are its register — an annotated list of those who belong. Marilyn Monroe, who did not graduate from high school and was sensitive about it, at age 29 had a photographer shoot her portrait as it might have appeared in an annual.

For all of the memories that are attached to high school annuals, they are not good predictors of destiny, either. Eydie Gorme’s yearbook emphasized her cheerleading, before adding, “sings a little, too.” Dwight Eisenhower’s high school annual had him becoming a history professor at Yale, his brother Edgar a two-term president of the United States. If Ed Muskie also was spotted as a future president, so was Mel Brooks.

The real question, however, is not whether yearbooks predict well, but whether high school does.
