Crazy new styles of coiffure (1864)

As for these illustrations… well, I have no explanation whatsoever. I don’t have access to the pages either side of this page of drawings featuring four supremely unique hairstyles, so have no context. Ideas for a costume party? Humor piece? (I am assuming that — particularly given the one with the rodent in the middle — they cannot be serious.) This was published in a major national magazine. Possible scenarios welcome in the comments!

From the top:

No. 1. The Dustman (very chaste).

No. 3. The Hare (suitable for a matron).

No. 2. The Serpentine (quite original).

No. 4. The Excelsior (suitable for a very young lady).
