A quick note: This simple dish from the 70s isn’t like the Asian recipe for sesame chicken (for that, you can get a great recipe here).

Instead, this dinner is more like a Shake-N-Bake coated chicken, but instead of a pre-packaged mix, dredging the chicken in a mix you make of Bisquick, herbs, and sesame seeds.

When you’ve got Bisquick on the shelf, you simply don’t need another chicken coating mix. Because chicken coated with Bisquick always turns out just the way America likes it — crisp on the outside, tender on the inside.

Baked sesame-herb chicken

Prep Time: 25 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes


  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2/3 cup Bisquick baking mix
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme leaves
  • 2 teaspoons ground sage
  • 2 teaspoons parsley flakes
  • 1 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pounds broiler-fryer chicken, cut up


  1. Heat oven to 425 (F).
  2. Heat butter in oblong pan, 13" by 9" by 2-inches, in oven until melted.
  3. Mix baking mix and seasonings; coat chicken.
  4. Place chicken, skin sides down, in pan.
  5. Bake uncovered 35 minutes.
  6. Turn; bake until done, about 15 minutes longer.


High Altitude Directions (3500 to 6500 feet): Bake uncovered 40 minutes. Turn; bake until done, about 20 minutes longer.
