This huge beast once roamed the US
Giant Ground Sloth’s skeleton dug from the La Brea asphaltum beds near Los Angeles, California. (Note the size of the great beast compared with the man beside it).
Many specimens of the prehistoric animal life of this continent are being excavated daily in this bed. All the bones are wonderfully well preserved on account of the chemical qualities of the asphalt. The theory is advanced that in the beginning the animals thought the great lake of molten asphalt was water and waded into it, either to drink or wallow, and were trapped by the treacherous bog and were mired to their death. Specimens of giant birds as well as other animal life have been found.
