Where the West was won

Seventeen years in the making, the Gateway Arch — a stainless-steel monument to the winning of the West — was finished last week when its 10-ton keystone was wedged into place 630 feet above St Louis’s Mississippi riverfront.

Designed by the late architect Eero Saarinen, the eye-catching arch is the centerpiece of an ambitious $29 million, 40-block riverfront park complex.
