After injuring her right knee in a 1905 production of La Tosca, Sarah Bernhardt injured her knee — which never healed properly. By 1915, gangrene set in and the leg was amputated. Despite the gloom and doom predicted by The Day Book, she just decided to ditch the prosthetic and continue her career on one leg. – AJW

Sarah Bernhardt never to appear on stage again?

Paris, Sept. 11 [1915] – Sarah Bernhardt, world’s greatest actress, probably never will appear upon the stage again.

After a single performance here for the movies, she discovered she was unable to use her new artificial leg well enough to walk. She has canceled her American engagement and returned today to Bordeaux.
