Atomic explosions: The record to date

Since September 23, 1949, when Russia first got the A-bomb, US has touched off 82 atomic explosions — all announced in advance to the world.

In the same period, Russia has set off at least 39 atomic explosions — the exact number is not known. Only a few tests have been revealed by the Russians. Most were announced by the US Atomic Energy Commission, whose technicians detected Soviet explosions by measuring the rise in radioactive fallout at monitoring stations outside Russia.
