Yosemite’s Half Dome (1898)
While it’s called “South Dome” in the images below, the same geological feature — a granite dome — is now called “Half Dome,” and is one of Yosemite’s best-known rock formation. Looking back even further, the Native Americans referred to the formation as “Tis-sa-ack,” which means “cleft rock.”
The crest of Half Dome rises more than 4700 feet above the floor of the valley.
